APD is a type of hearing loss that is a symptom of being unable to understand what others are saying, even though you can hear sound.
There are several factors that cause such APD, and we will take a closer look at APD caused by cognitive biases (attention and memory).
Please refer to 4 types of APD in adults Characteristics and causes of each type for more information on the causes of APD.
Attention and memory are necessary for listening
What does attention and memory have to do with your ability to listen to a story? Many people think that this is a good idea.
Concentration and memory are very important in understanding what the other person is saying.
When we talk to others, we unconsciously go through the following processes.
Listen to what the other person is saying
↓
Temporarily memorize what the other person said
↓
Understand what is being said from memory
↓
Decide what to say
↓
Speak out loud

In this way, we listen to what the other person is saying and understand what is being said once we memorize it in the short term.
So attention and memory are necessary skills for conversation.
What happens if you don't pay attention?
If you are not paying attention, you cannot concentrate on what the other person is saying.
This is not a problem when you are talking to someone and your surroundings are as quiet as a library and all you can hear is the sound of the other person and yourself talking.
However, everyday life is filled with various sounds.
If you are talking with someone and you hear some sound, your attention will be diverted to it and you will not be able to hear what they are saying.
If you do this, you will not be able to understand what they are saying.
If you do not pay attention, you will not be able to concentrate on what the other person is saying.
As a result, you cannot understand what is being said.
What happens if you don't have a good memory?
Memory is divided into short-term memory and long-term memory, and when people talk about memory, they are usually talking about long-term memory.
Here, memory refers to short-term memory.
When we have a conversation, we temporarily store what the other person is saying in our short-term memory.
This temporary storage is called working memory, and some people have a small working memory capacity.
This means that the amount of information that can be stored is small, which causes problems such as losing the flow of the conversation or not being able to understand what the other person is saying in the first place.
How to deal with cognitive bias type
If attention is affected, it may be necessary to ask the other person to speak a little louder, or to change the work environment so that the person can work in an environment with as little noise as possible.
Of course, it is not always possible to change the environment immediately.
Therefore, even just being aware of this so that you can pay attention to it yourself can improve your listening comprehension.
If memory is affected, one way to help is to learn memory skills.
For example, people with a good memory use chunking, which is a way of grouping information, and imagery, which is a way of remembering numbers in a way that makes sense of them.
By learning these memory skills, you can expect to improve your memory.
